The Elevador da Glória, also known as the Glória Funicular, is a funicular railway line in Lisbon, Portugal. It connects the Pombaline downtown area at Restauradores Square with the Bairro Alto at the Garden/Overlook of São Pedro de Alcântara. The funicular was inaugurated in 1885 and was initially run by a water-powered counterweight system, which was later replaced with a steam-powered mechanism and eventually electrified in 1915. The line conforms to the funicular principle, with two cars permanently attached to opposite ends of a haulage cable, which is looped over a pulley at the upper end of the track. The funicular includes two cars that operate parallel along two axes, descending and climbing simultaneously, and are inclined to allow patrons to maintain a level perspective. The Elevador da Glória is a National Monument and a popular tourist attraction in Lisbon
