Guimarães Castle is a medieval castle in the municipality of Guimarães, in the northern region of Portugal. It is a representation of the birth of the country and is closely linked to the military history of the kingdom's foundation. The castle is a military fortification with a pentagram shape, including eight rectangular towers, a military square, and a central keep. It was built under the orders of Mumadona Dias in the 10th century to defend the monastery from attacks by Moors and Norsemen. The castle is associated with the origins of the Portuguese nation and is said to be the birthplace of Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal. Visitors can explore the castle's walls, towers, and courtyards, and see the bronze medallion depicting D. Afonso Henriques. The castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers a glimpse into the medieval past of Portugal
