Surf's Up on the Alentejo Coast

Family activity holiday Odemira, Beja, Portugal

What to expect

The Alentejo coast in Portugal is a hidden gem for surfers, with its wild Atlantic coastline, sandy bluffs, and rolling waves. The region is home to Portugal's most conserved Atlantic coastline, with miles of wild and often secluded beaches carved into the cliffs. The Southwest Alentejo and Vicentina Coast Natural Park cover over 60 miles of protected land and shore, stretching from Sao Torpes near Sines to Cape St. Vincent, Europe's most southwesterly point. The park has 35 certified habitats housing over 100 rare species of plants, and the cliffs hide nests of white storks. The Alentejo's beaches flow from one to another, some of them long stretches of sand with impressive cliffs. The rolling Atlantic offers waves, clean waters, and lots of surfing opportunities. The best time to surf in Alentejo is from September to April, with consistent swells and fewer crowds. The region has something for every level of surfer, from mellow bays ideal for beginners to powerful beach breaks that challenge experienced surfers
