Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo

Island Vila Franca do Campo, Azores, Portugal

What to expect

Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo is a small, uninhabited islet located off the south-central coast of the island of São Miguel in the Azores. The islet is a result of the crater of an ancient submerged volcano and is one of São Miguel's main tourist attractions. It is classified as a Nature Reserve, with endemic vegetation lining the walls of its crater and a perfectly circular natural lake inside. The lake is linked to the sea by a narrow channel and has crystal-clear waters, making it excellent for swimming and diving. The islet is also home to many sea birds, including Cory's shearwaters and terns. The islet's unique geological formations, including the 32.5-metre volcanic stack called Farilhão, make it a popular destination for visitors
