Fumarolas is a unique geological area located in the parish of Furnas, in the municipality of Povoação, São Miguel Island, Portugal. The area features abundant vegetation, colorful landscapes, and intense volcanic activity, with five active volcanoes, although all are dormant. The Fumarolas are characterized by boiling waters, bubbling mud, and steam emissions, offering a distinctive natural landscape. Visitors can walk around the nearby Furnas Lagoon, which is situated in an ancient crater of the Furnas Volcano, and enjoy the beautiful scenery, go boating, or have a picnic. The area is also home to the Chapel of Our Lady of Victories, a neo-Gothic style church, and the Furnas Monitoring and Research Center. One of the highlights of the area is the traditional Cozido das Furnas, a dish of assorted meats and vegetables cooked in a pot buried in the holes near the fumaroles and under the ground, which can be tried in local restaurants
