What to expect
The Forte de São Brás is a defensive construction located at the eastern end of the city of Ponta Delgada, on São Miguel Island. It was built in the 16th century to protect the city against attacks by privateers and pirates. The fort played a crucial role in the security and defense of the city due to its strategic location. Visitors can explore the Azores Military Museum, which exhibits military history, ancient weapons, and other artifacts. The fort is considered the most important example of 16th-century military architecture and the most powerful fortification on the island. It has been altered over the centuries with new additions and transformations, and it currently houses the Command of the Azores Military Zone and the Azores Military Museum
