What to expect

The Museu de Aveiro is a museum located in the old Convent of Jesus of the female Dominican Order, one of the most ancient convents in Aveiro. The convent dates back to the 2nd half of the 15th century and was founded by D. Brites Leitão and D. Mécia Pereira. The museum presents a visit circuit with two different parts: the monumental route and the permanent exhibition. The monumental route includes the low choir with the tomb of Princess Saint Joanna, the Church of Jesus, the cloister with its chapels, the chapter room, and the refectory. The Church of Jesus is decorated with sumptuous golden woodwork and Portuguese azulejos, making it a notable example of exuberant baroque decoration. The museum also has a significant collection of paintings, sculptures, tally, tile, and jewels. Visitors can explore the silent Dominican rooms, the arcades of the cloister, and the color contrast in the church altars

This family's experience:

Activities: We visited the Museu de Aveiro dedicated to sacred art, housed in the former Convent of Jesus of the female Dominican Order. We saw the tomb of Santa Joana, the Church of Jesus, decorated with gilded wood and Portuguese azulejos, the cloister, the refectory, chapels, and the chapter house. We also admired a collection of paintings, sculptures, and jewelry

Highlights: We were all touched by the statue of the crucified Christ. Nolan said: "for once, it really corresponds to a man who looks like us, it's true." We felt much closer to this Christ with a shaved head, a 3-day beard, brown and with features marked by fatigue. The crèche with many details was also amazing ✨
