Old Town Church of St. Mary

Church Torun, Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland

What to expect

The Old Town Church of St. Mary, also known as the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a stunning example of sacral architecture in Poland. Erected in the second half of the 14th century, it was the highest hall church in Central Europe, with naves and aisles reaching 26.8 meters high. The church features a beautiful cloister with Mannerist gables, and its interior boasts slender pillars, high narrow windows with stained glass, and a 27-meter-high polychrome stellar vault. The church's furnishings include valuable Gothic polychrome decorations, intricately carved oaken stalls, and a Gothic figure of the Virgin Mary. Visitors can explore the church and its surroundings, including the former Franciscan area, which now houses a municipal gymnasium

Highlights: We learned about the history of the church and the saint. The kids were curious about the stele and chapel. "We saw a church in which the blessed Stefan Wincenty Frelichowski was venerated – the patron saint of the scouts." ✨
