Cusco, also known as Cuzco, is a city in southeastern Peru, near the Sacred Valley of the Andes mountain range and the Huatanay river. It is the capital of the Cusco Region and was the capital of the Inca Empire until the 16th-century Spanish conquest. The city has become a major tourist destination, hosting over 2 million visitors a year and providing passage to numerous Incan ruins, such as Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Modern Wonders of the World. Cusco is a complex urban centre with distinct religious and administrative functions, surrounded by clearly delineated areas for agricultural, artisan, and industrial production. The city is home to many historical landmarks, including the Temple of the Sun or Qoricancha, and offers a unique cultural experience for visitors
