Saltstraumen

Maelstrom Saltstraumen, Nordland, Norway

What to expect

Saltstraumen is a small strait with one of the strongest tidal currents in the world, located in Nordland county, Norway. The current is created when the tide turns and flows in and out of the channel between Saltenfjorden and Skjerstadfjorden, generating large eddies and whirlpools. The area is known for its rich biological diversity, with an abundance of fish, sea eagles, and other wildlife. Visitors can experience the maelstrom by joining a RIB-rafting tour, diving underwater, or observing it from land. The area also offers traditional Northern Norwegian fish dishes and food prepared in the authentic Stone Age style. Saltstraumen is a protected marine area, and it's recommended to enjoy the stunning views and powerful current without fishing, to help preserve the fragile marine life
