What to expect

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a world-renowned natural attraction featuring thousands of glowworms and stunning limestone formations. The caves are a result of 30 million years of geological and volcanic activity, with the limestone composed of fossilized corals, seashells, and other marine organisms. Visitors can take a boat ride through the glowworm grotto, marveling at the magical glowworms and learning about the cave's history and legends from guides who are often direct descendants of the Maori chief who originally explored the cave. The caves are accessible to those with reasonable mobility, with good handrails and paths, but are not wheelchair accessible. However, the nearby Ruakuri Cave is wheelchair friendly
