What to expect

Sutton Salt Lake Scenic Reserve is a unique natural area located in the Otago region of New Zealand. The reserve features a salt lake with no outlet, which has concentrated salts from surrounding soils over time. The lake is surrounded by spectacular parallel rock tor ridges and is home to a variety of salt-tolerant herbs and grasses. A range of water birds and waders use the lake, feeding on tiny salt-adapted aquatic animals. The reserve also includes rock tors, shrublands, and grasslands, providing a habitat for various plant and animal species. A 3.5 km self-guided loop walk is available, taking visitors through the stunning landscape and offering opportunities for birding and walking. However, dogs are not permitted, and the track is not wheelchair accessible
