What to expect

The Bay of Islands is a subtropical micro-region known for its stunning beauty and history. It encompasses 144 islands between Cape Brett and the Purerua Peninsula and includes the boutique towns of Opua, Paihia, Russell, and Kerikeri. The area offers a range of activities, including boating, fishing, sailing, snorkelling, paddleboarding, and kayaking. Visitors can explore the islands, enjoy beautiful river and seaside walking tracks, and encounter the mighty Kauri Tree in pristine subtropical rainforest. The Bay of Islands is also rich in history and culture, with many pivotal moments in New Zealand's story happening here, including the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Quaint seaside towns like Russell have plenty of stories to share, and the area extends well beyond the waters' edge, with inland villages like Kerikeri and Kawakawa to wander through, waterfalls to explore, historic and cultural sites, and unique attractions like the geothermal hot pools at Ngawha Springs. Opua is a beautiful seaside town and the 'Gateway to the Bay of Islands', known as a sailing haven, and a great spot to explore the water and relax in a peaceful and beautiful environment
