Lake Pukaki is the largest of three roughly parallel alpine lakes running north–south along the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin on New Zealand's South Island. The lake is fed at its northern end by the braided Tasman River and has a distinctive blue color created by glacial flour. The lake covers an area of 178.7 km2 and has a surface elevation of 518.2 to 532 meters above sea level. The lake is part of the Waitaki hydroelectric scheme and has been raised twice to increase storage capacity. The scenery around the lake is startling, with high-country sheep stations, backcountry accommodation, and luxury lodges. The lake offers various activities such as guided walking, bike trails, scenic flights, and unforgettable stargazing and photography experiences. There are also nearby amenities such as the Mount Cook Alpine Salmon Shop, Glentanner Park Centre, and Alpine Lavender farm
