Giants House

Art gallery Akaroa, Canterbury, New Zealand

What to expect

The Giant's House is a unique and colourful sculpture mosaic garden, set on a sheltered, north-facing, sunny hillside in Akaroa. The garden surrounds a large historic house, built from totara and kauri, and features flat areas, terraced gardens, and intimate garden rooms with vistas of the valley and sea. The garden is filled with surprises, including a sculpted mosaic grand piano that plays music, and a fountain feature. Visitors can also explore the Contemporary Art Gallery, which showcases the artwork of Josie Martin, and enjoy the outdoor summer cafe, the Artist's Palate Café. The garden is suitable for families and children, with a kid-friendly atmosphere and activities. The Giant's House has been recognized as a Garden of International Significance since 2018 and a Garden of National Significance since 2012
