Lake Ōkataina is a deep, pristine lake with hidden outflows, offering scenic beauty and opportunities for boating, fishing, and picnicking. The lake's name means 'the lake of laughter' and is steeped in cultural history. It is home to native fish species such as common smelt, common bully, banded kōkopu, and kōaro, as well as introduced species like trout and morihana. The surrounding scenic reserve is remote and beautiful, with native bush down to the water's edge boasting rimu, totara, rata, and kahikatea. Visitors can enjoy photo opportunities, gorgeous sandy beaches, and crystal blue sparkling water. To protect the lake's water quality, visitors are encouraged to check, clean, and dry their gear when moving between waterways to prevent the spread of didymo and other freshwater pests
