What to expect
State Highway 2 is a major highway in the North Island of New Zealand, running north-south through eastern parts of the island from the outskirts of Auckland to Wellington. The highway passes through various towns and cities, including Tauranga, Gisborne, Napier, Hastings, and Masterton. It consists of a two-lane single carriageway for most of its length, with frequent passing lanes and sections of four-lane dual-carriageway expressway at Maramarua, Tauranga, and Wellington. The highway also features scenic routes, such as the Pacific Coast Highway and the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail

Activities: We cycled on State Highway Two, a road known as Suicide Highway due to the many accidents that have occurred on it. We were particularly cautious of large trucks and other vehicles as we cycled with our children
