The Centre Culturel Tjibaou is a cultural centre that celebrates the vernacular Kanak culture, the indigenous culture of New Caledonia. It was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and named after Jean-Marie Tjibaou, the leader of the independence movement. The centre is surrounded by landscaping inspired by traditional Kanak design elements and features ten large conical cases or pavilions patterned on the traditional Kanak Grand Hut design. The centre includes a museum, a space for spectacle, a media library, and a belvedere with a view of the Magenta Bay. Visitors can walk through the cases and discover the different spaces, including the 'chemin kanak' which retraces the myth of the first man Téâ Kanaké. The centre also features a park with various plant species, including the igname, the houp, and the kaori, which are important in Kanak tradition. The centre is a great place to learn about the Kanak culture and history, and to enjoy the beautiful surroundings
