What to expect
Loevestein Castle is a medieval castle located in the municipality of Zaltbommel, Gelderland, Netherlands. The castle was built by the knight Dirk Loef of Horne between 1357 and 1397 and has a rich history, having been used as a toll castle, a fortress, and even a prison for political prisoners. One of its most famous inmates was the Dutch humanist and lawyer Hugo Grotius, who escaped from the castle in a book chest. The castle is now a museum and function centre, offering a unique glimpse into the Netherlands' history. Visitors can explore the castle, the outer bailey, and the garrison, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the nature reserve where the castle is located. The castle also offers educational programs for children and is a great place for families to learn about history and have fun together
