What to expect

El Tajin is a pre-Columbian archeological site and one of the largest and most important cities of the Classic era of Mesoamerica. The site is located in the highlands of the municipality of Papantla in Veracruz, Mexico. It features numerous temples, palaces, ballcourts, and pyramids, including the famous Pyramid of the Niches, which is a masterpiece of ancient Mexican and American architecture. The city has a unique architecture characterized by decorative niches and cement in forms unknown in the rest of Mesoamerica. With 17 ballcourts, El Tajin is the city with the most number of ballcourts, which has been interpreted as a necessity due to the diversity of cultures that inhabited the city. The site is also home to the annual Cumbre Tajin Festival, which features indigenous and foreign cultural events as well as concerts by popular musicians
