Sian Ka'an is a biosphere reserve located on the east coast of the Yucatán peninsula in Mexico. The name Sian Ka'an means 'Origin of the Sky' or 'Gate of Heaven' in the Yuatec Mayan language. The reserve is a habitat for a rich flora and fauna, with over 300 species of birds and a diverse range of terrestrial vertebrates. It features tropical forests, mangroves, and marshes, as well as a large marine section with a barrier reef. The reserve has an area of 5,281 square kilometers and is home to 23 known archeological sites of the Maya civilization.
