Monte Albán is a large pre-Columbian archaeological site located on a low mountainous range in the Valley of Oaxaca. The site was inhabited by the Zapotecs and features several hundred artificial terraces, a dozen clusters of mounded architecture, and a civic ceremonial center. It was an important city in Mesoamerica for nearly one thousand years and was the capital of a large-scale expansionist polity that dominated much of the Oaxacan highlands. The site includes pyramids, canals, and artificial mounds, and its architecture shows a mix of Zapotec and other Mesoamerican influences. Visitors can explore the site's many structures and learn about its history and significance
