Sumidero Canyon

Sumidero Canyon is a deep natural canyon located in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. The canyon's creation began around the same time as the Grand Canyon in the U.S. state of Arizona, by a crack in the area's crust and subsequent erosion by the Grijalva River, which still runs through it. The canyon has vertical walls that reach as high as 1,000 meters, with the river turning up to 90 degrees during the 13-kilometer length of the narrow passage. The canyon is surrounded by the Sumidero Canyon National Park, a federally protected natural area of Mexico which extends for 21,789 hectares over four municipalities of the state of Chiapas. The park is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, including jaguars, ocelots, howler monkeys, river otters, toucans, and scarlet macaws. Visitors can take a boat ride through the canyon, which offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape and the opportunity to spot wildlife. The canyon is also home to several caves, waterfalls, and rock formations, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts
