Penang Snake Temple

Temple Bayan Lepas, Penang, Malaysia

What to expect

The Penang Snake Temple, also known as the Temple of the Azure Clouds, is a Chinese temple dedicated to the worship of Chor Soo Kong, a Buddhist monk who lived during the Song dynasty. The temple is famous for being a refuge for resident snakes, including Wagler's pit vipers and green tree snakes, which are believed to be reincarnated disciples of the deified monk. Visitors can see the snakes up close, and it is said that the incense smoke makes them docile. The temple also features intricate architecture, a courtyard, and a shrine hall dedicated to Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. While it's a unique and fascinating place to visit, it's essential to exercise caution and keep hands and feet to oneself, especially when children are present
