Heraclea Lyncestis is an ancient Macedonian city located near Bitola, North Macedonia. It was founded in the middle of the 4th century BC by Philip II of Macedon as an important strategic point. The city was named in honor of the mythological hero Heracles and was a significant stop on the Via Egnatia road. Heraclea features several Roman buildings, including a theatre, thermae (baths), and a portico, as well as a small and a great basilica and a great basilica with well-preserved mosaics. The city was an important episcopal center in the early Byzantine period and was eventually abandoned in the 6th century AD
