Wat Xieng Thong

Temple Laos, Laos, Laos

What to expect

Wat Xieng Thong is one of the most impressive temples in Luang Prabang, located near the bank of the Mekong river. The temple was built in 1559 and features a classic example of Luang Prabang style with a gracefully sloping roof and glass tile murals. The main temple building, known as the sim, is elaborately decorated with gold stenciling and houses a large Buddha statue. The temple grounds also include a Chariot Hall, a Chapel of the Standing Buddha, and a Red Chapel, which are all worth visiting. Wat Xieng Thong was used extensively by the Laos royal family and was the site of coronations until the dissolution of the Laotian monarchy in 1975. Visitors can explore the temple and its surroundings, taking in the beautiful architecture and learning about the history and culture of the region
