Al-Karak, also known as Karak, is a city in Jordan with a rich history dating back to the Iron Age. It is situated on a hilltop about 1,000 meters above sea level and is surrounded by a valley, offering a view of the Dead Sea. The city is home to the medieval Karak Castle, one of the three largest castles in the region, which was built by the Crusaders in the 12th century. Al-Karak has been an important city for various cultures, including the Moabites, Nabateans, Romans, and Byzantines. Today, it is a city of around 32,000 people, with a mix of old and new buildings, including 19th-century Ottoman-period structures. The city has a long history of Christian presence, with some of the oldest Christian communities in the world, and contains several Byzantine churches.
