What to expect

Meiji Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken. The shrine is located in a forested area and offers a tranquil escape from the busy city. Visitors can take part in traditional Shinto activities, such as making offerings at the main hall, buying charms and amulets, or writing out their wishes on an ema. The shrine complex includes the Naien, the inner precinct, which is centered on the shrine buildings and includes a treasure museum, and the Gaien, the outer precinct, which includes the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery and various sports facilities. The shrine is surrounded by a large forest that covers an area of 70 hectares and is home to over 120,000 trees of 365 different species. The Inner Garden, located in the southern section of the shrine grounds, is a popular spot for relaxation and features a beautiful iris garden and a small well, Kiyomasa's Well
