What to expect

Yasaka Shrine, also known as Gion Shrine, is a famous Shinto shrine located in the Gion District of Kyoto, Japan. The shrine is dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto and his consort Kushinadahime, as well as eight offspring deities. It is known for its summer festival, the Gion Matsuri, which takes place every July and involves a procession with massive floats and hundreds of participants. The shrine also becomes busy during the cherry blossom season in April, as the adjacent Maruyama Park is a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing. Visitors can explore the shrine's main hall, which combines the inner sanctuary and offering hall into a single building, and see the dance stage with hundreds of lanterns that get lit in the evenings
