What to expect

Tōfuku-ji Temple is a large Zen temple in southeastern Kyoto, famous for its spectacular autumn colors. The temple was founded in 1236 and is the head temple of its own school within the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. Visitors can explore the temple grounds, which include several buildings, gardens, and a famous bridge called Tsutenkyo Bridge. The temple's Sanmon Gate is a National Treasure and the oldest Zen main gate in Japan. The Hojo, the head priest's former living quarters, features unique rock gardens surrounding the building on all sides. The temple is also known for its beautiful autumn foliage, with people coming from all over Japan to see the vibrant colors of the maple trees
