What to expect

Shimogamo Shrine, also known as Kamo-mioya Shrine, is a historic Shinto sanctuary located in Kyoto. It is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan and is dedicated to the veneration of Tamayori-hime and her father, Kamo Taketsunomi. The shrine is situated in a primeval forest called Tadasu no Mori, which is believed to be a sacred area where lies are exposed. Visitors can bathe their feet in Mitarashi Pond to wash away sins and illnesses, and to ensure safe birth. The shrine is also the site of many festivals and events throughout the year, including an electrifying yabusame archery contest and the Aoi Matsuri, which celebrates the spring harvest. With its impressive architectural details and many small shrines within the complex, Shimogamo Shrine is a must-visit destination for families interested in history, culture, and nature

This family's experience:

Activities: We visited the Shimogamo Jinja, another UNESCO World Heritage site, surrounded by the Tadasu no Mori forest. We bought a Homikuji, which revealed its content when soaked in water

Highlights: We had an excellent fortune on our draw. We then accessed the back of the temple, a much more peaceful place ✨
