What to expect
Ryoan-ji Temple is a Zen temple famous for its mysterious rock garden, considered one of the finest surviving examples of kare-sansui, a refined type of Japanese Zen temple garden design. The garden features 15 carefully placed rocks that seem to drift in a sea of raked white gravel, surrounded by low earthen walls. The temple grounds also include a park area with a pond, walking trails, and a restaurant serving traditional Japanese cuisine. Visitors can view the garden from a platform and explore the temple's other gardens and buildings.
