Kamigamo Shrine is a historic Shinto sanctuary located in northern Kyoto, and one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan. The shrine is dedicated to the veneration of Kamo Wake-ikazuchi, the kami of thunder. It is famous for its worship hall, rebuilt in 1628-1629, and its sacred horse, which is sometimes stabled on the property. The shrine's grounds combine natural beauty with traditional architecture, featuring sand constructions called tatesuna that represent the divine mountain, and a sacred bridge crossing over a clear stream. Kamigamo Shrine is also known for hosting festivals, including the Aoi Matsuri, one of Kyoto's three most famous festivals.
