Owakudani

Geothermal valley Hakone-machi, Kanagawa, Japan

What to expect

Owakudani is a volcanic valley with active sulfur vents and hot springs, offering striking scenic views of Mount Fuji on clear days. The area is the result of a volcanic eruption over 3,000 years ago and features steam vents, bubbling pools, and a unique opportunity to purchase hard-boiled eggs cooked in the volcanically hot waters, which are said to extend one's life by seven years. A short walking trail leads into the volcanic zone, and for the more adventurous, a hiking trail is available, although it may be closed due to volcanic activity. The area is known for its intense volcanic activity and peculiar sulfur smell, earning it the nickname 'Hell Valley'

This family's experience:

Activities: We went to Owakudani, a geothermal valley. We bought black eggs in the store. These are cooked in the heat of the sulfur and therefore take on a black color

Highlights: We enjoyed eating pitch black ice cream here and this was super tasty ✨
