The Clock Tower is one of the most famous architectural landmarks in Venice, standing over an arch that leads into the main shopping street of the city, the old Merceria. The tower contains a complicated system of gear wheels and features two great bronze figures, known as 'the Moors', which strike the hours on a bell. The clock face is surrounded by a marble circle marked with the 24 hours of the day in Roman numerals, and the signs of the zodiac in gold. The tower also features a semi-circular gallery with statues of the Virgin and Child, and a great clock face above the arch. The buildings on each side of the tower have been let off separately as shops and apartments since the early 18th century
