Basilica of St Francis

The Basilica of St Francis in Assisi is a complex of two churches, one on top of the other, that preserves the mortal remains of Saint Francis. The Lower Church, built from 1228 to 1230, has a Latin cross plan with walls frescoed by some of the most important Italian artists of the 13th and 14th centuries, including Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini, and Pietro Lorenzetti. The Upper Church, built from 1230 to 1253, is Gothic in style with French influences and has a nave divided into four bays, cross vaults, transept, and polygonal apse. The basilica also includes the Sacro Convento, a library, and a museum. The place is considered one of the most sacred and visited in Italy, and it's a must-see destination for those interested in art, history, and spirituality
