Camposanto

The Camposanto is a historical edifice located in the northern edge of the Cathedral Square in Pisa, Italy. It is also known as the 'holy field' because it was built around a shipload of sacred soil from Golgotha. The building is a huge, oblong Gothic cloister with 43 blind arches and two doorways. The inner court is surrounded by elaborate round arches with slender mullions and plurilobed tracery. The cemetery has three chapels and contains a huge collection of Roman sarcophagi, as well as Roman and Etruscan sculptures and urns.
