The town also boasts the Abbey of St. Scholastica, which was first built in 981 and reconstructed in the Gothic style after an earthquake. Subiaco is an important agricultural center and has paper mills and stone quarries. The town preserves its medieval form and owes many of its buildings to Pope Pius VI. Visitors can explore the town's historic center, visit the abbey and grotto, and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty. Subiaco is also famous for being the place where the first books were printed in Italy in the late 15th century
