The Spanish Steps, also known as Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti, are a staircase in Rome that climbs the steep slope between Piazza di Spagna and the church of Trinità dei Monti. The monumental stairway of 135 steps was built between 1723 and 1725 and features carvings of the fleurs-de-lis of the Bourbon family and the checkered eagle coat of arms of Pope Innocent XIII. The steps have long been a gathering place for the wealthy, the beautiful, and the bohemian, and are surrounded by cafés and flower-sellers, making it a relaxing and colorful place to visit. The area is also home to the Fontana della Barcaccia, a fountain believed to have been designed by Pietro Bernini, and the Trinità dei Monti church, which contains impressive murals and is free to visit
