Bocca della Verità

Sculpture Rome, Latium, Italy

What to expect

The Bocca della Verità, or Mouth of Truth, is a famous ancient marble mask located in the portico of the Paleochristian church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. The mask has a diameter of about 1.75 meters and is dedicated to the God of the Sea, represented by a male bearded face with holes for the eyes, nose, and mouth. According to legend, the mouth could bite the hand of liars. The mask is said to have been a sewer cover from the Roman age and was probably used to test the faithfulness of women. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction, and visitors can put their hand inside the mouth to test their honesty. The church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, where the mask is located, is a beautiful example of Paleochristian architecture and features a Romanesque campanile, a schola cantorum, and a rich Cosmatesque pavement

Highlights: It was fun to see our kids put their hands in the mouth and wonder if they were telling the truth ✨
