Lake Albano is a small volcanic crater lake in the Alban Hills of Lazio, located at the foot of Monte Cavo, 20 km southeast of Rome. The lake is 3.5 km long and 2.3 km wide, and was formed by the overlapping union of two volcanic craters. It has a depth of about 170 m and is the deepest lake in Lazio. The lake is fed by underground sources and drained by an artificial outlet, which was built around 395 BC to control flooding. The lake hosted the canoeing and rowing events of the 1960 Summer Olympic Games and is a popular resort area with the towns of Albano Laziale and Castel Gandolfo, the papal summer residence, located on its shores
