Roman Theatre of Trieste

Historic site Trieste, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy

What to expect

The Roman Theatre of Trieste is a well-preserved ancient Roman theatre that could accommodate up to 3,500 spectators. It was built almost entirely of masonry, except for the stage, which was made of wood. The theatre features a cavea with 12 rows of seating in the lower section and approximately 9 rows in the upper section, with a central pulvinar occupying three rows. The orchestra measures 20.34 meters in diameter and is surrounded by a paved passageway. The theatre also has a two-story column screen with Corinthian order. Visitors can see the orchestra at the foot of the auditorium and part of the stage, with wings decorated by niches where statues of members of the imperial family or eminent members of the local community stood. Sculptures and inscriptions are on display near the San Giusto Cathedral in the J.J. Winckelmann Antiquities Museum
