Grado is a historic seaside town located on a lagoon island along Italy’s north-east Adriatic coast, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. The town has a population of 9,000 and is very near the head of the Adriatic Sea. It is frequently described as a northern relative to Venice. The territory of the municipality of Grado stretches between the mouth of the river Isonzo and the Adriatic Sea and the homonymous lagoon from Porto Buso to Fossalon. The main town is located on the larger island and is divided into numerous areas and districts. The island bears the tradition of an ancient fishing village and preserves an old town centre that is a labyrinth of narrow streets and small squares. The lagoon comprises about 30 islands and covers an area of about 90 square kilometres. Grado is a popular tourist destination, known commonly as 'L'Isola del Sole' ('The Island of the Sun'). It is also famous because it is a spa town, with a maritime hospice for children and a good place for the treatment of some childhood diseases. The town has a lovely historic town centre, miles of highly-equipped sandy beaches, and a working fishing port
