Salse di Nirano

National park Fiorano Modenese, Emilia-Romagna, Italy

What to expect

The Salse di Nirano Nature Reserve is a unique geological phenomenon featuring 'salse' or mud volcanoes, which are eruptions of cold mud produced by rising sea water mixed with hydrocarbons. The reserve covers an area of 209 hectares and is home to a variety of plant species, including the Puccinellia fasciculata, which is typically found in coastal areas. The reserve has a network of equipped pathways and educational itineraries, making it a great place to visit with family. The Salse di Nirano are considered 'pseudo-volcanoes' due to their similar features to volcanoes, but completely different origin. The reserve is part of the Central Emilia Parks Agency and is one of the main stops on the Mud Volcanoes Path, a 60 km path that runs across six towns and touches over 50 points of interest
