Piazza Maggiore

Piazza Maggiore is a central square in Bologna, Italy, largely preserving its 15th-century layout. The square is surrounded by major administrative and religious buildings in the history of Bologna, including the Palazzo d'Accursio, Palazzo dei Notai, Basilica of San Petronio, Palazzo dei Banchi, and Palazzo del Podestà. It dates back to 1200 when the Municipality began to acquire houses and land to build a square, which was to represent the importance of the municipal institution and bring together various city activities.
