Anfiteatro

Amphitheater Pompei, Campania, Italy

What to expect

The Anfiteatro romano di Pompei, also known as the Amphitheatre of Pompeii, is an ancient Roman amphitheatre located in Pompeii, Italy. It is one of the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatres and was built around 70 BC. The amphitheatre was used for gladiatorial contests, animal hunts, and public events, and could hold up to 20,000 spectators. The design of the amphitheatre is considered near-optimal for crowd control, with a corridor that runs around the circumference of the building, providing access to the arena. The amphitheatre was damaged by an earthquake in 62 AD, but was restored and continued to be used until the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, which buried the city of Pompeii under ash and pumice. Today, the amphitheatre is a popular tourist destination and a testament to the engineering and architectural skills of the ancient Romans
