Catacombe di San Gaudioso

Catacomb Naples, Campania, Italy

What to expect

The Catacombs of San Gaudioso are an underground paleo-Christian burial site located in the Rione Sanità district of Naples. The catacombs date back to the 4th-5th century AD and are the second most important early Christian cemetery in the city after the Catacombs of San Gennaro. The site is dedicated to St. Gaudiosus, a bishop who arrived in Naples from North Africa and was buried here between 451 and 453 AD. The catacombs feature frescoes and mosaics from the 5th and 6th centuries, including a depiction of the Madonna della Sanità, which is believed to be the oldest Marian depiction in Campania. The site also includes the tomb of St. Gaudiosus, as well as other ancient burials and artifacts. Visitors can access the catacombs through the crypt of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità
