Masada

Archaeological site Masada, Z, Israel

What to expect

Masada is a rugged natural fortress, of majestic beauty, in the Judaean Desert overlooking the Dead Sea. It is a symbol of the ancient kingdom of Israel, its violent destruction and the last stand of Jewish patriots in the face of the Roman army, in 73 A.D. The site was built as a palace complex, in the classic style of the early Roman Empire, by Herod the Great, King of Judaea. Visitors can explore the well-preserved remains of the fortress, including King Herod's northern palace, a Roman-style bath house, and a synagogue. The site also features a dramatic ascent by cable-car and a spectacular view of the Moab Mountains and the Dead Sea. Many people opt to join a guided tour to bring the site to life. Masada is one of Israel's most popular tourist attractions, attracting around 750,000 visitors a year
