Knocknarea is a large prominent hill with a height of 327 meters, located west of Sligo town in County Sligo, Ireland. The hill is visually striking with steep limestone cliffs and stands on the Cúil Irra peninsula overlooking the Atlantic coast. At the summit is one of Ireland's largest cairns, known as Queen Maeve's Cairn, which is believed to contain a Neolithic passage tomb. The cairn is a protected National Monument, and visitors are advised not to climb it to prevent damage. The area around Knocknarea is rich in pre-historic remains, including the Carrowmore tombs, and offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. The Queen Maeve Trail is a 6km loop that reaches the summit of Knocknarea, offering stunning views of the Ox Mountains, Lough Gill, and Slieve League in Donegal. The trail is suitable for families, but dogs are not permitted on sections of the trail that cross open farmland, and visitors are advised to exercise caution during rapidly changing weather conditions
