Lough Eske

Lake Donegal, County Donegal, Ireland

What to expect

Lough Eske is a small lake in County Donegal, Ireland, surrounded by the Bluestack Mountains. The lake is about 900 acres in size and is popular for fishing, especially for spring salmon, sea trout, and char. The area has many forest paths, including unassigned paths on the south-western shores of the lake and newly reconstructed paths in Ardnamona Wood. The lake has several islands, including Pigeon's Island, Grania's Island, Island O'Donnell, and Roshin Island. The powerful Ó Domhnaill clan had a castle and surrounding bawn on Island O'Donnell, and the friars from the Franciscan Friary in Donegal Town set up a new friary on the western shores of Lough Eske. The lake is a popular getaway destination, with two major hotels on its shores, making it a great place to visit with family and friends

Donegal with children: Family holidays in Ireland's wild north
This family's experience:

Activities: We took a walk near Lough Eske, a large lake. There was a section of the shore that was great for a family-friendly walk

Highlights: The family enjoyed the family-friendly walking trail that was near the lake. The family-friendly trail was located "along a more secluded piece of Lough Eske's shore." ✨
